Donald Trump won the election. He is our President-elect, like it or not. As a libertarian, I was shocked that Trump won, but elated that Hillary lost! Because my feelings were that mixed, on the morning after, instead of being depressed, I was feeling a little buoyant. No, I did not vote for Donald Trump, but I was so happy that Hillary Clinton and the mainstream media (MSM) got their comeuppance. They totally deserved to lose! And I don’t say this just because I disagree with their ideology. I say this, because I thought they behaved very badly during the election, and they have been behaving very badly ever since. Not Hillary, so much. I have stopped worrying about her. But the MSM have been out and out monsters — spoiled little brats who did not get their way. And then the news came out that Donald Trump held a press conference, not to answer questions from the press, but to yell at the MSM. Many of my fellow journalists are worried that this means the end to freedom of the press. Me, I have to laugh. I’m sorry, but they had that coming!
David Remnick of The New Yorker described it as follows:
For more than twenty minutes, Trump railed about “outrageous” and “dishonest” coverage. When he was asked about the sort of “fake news” that now clogs social media, Trump replied that it was the networks that were guilty of spreading fake news. The “worst,” he said, were CNN (“liars!”) and NBC.
Is it wrong of me to agree with Trump there? Didn’t I cover a story not too long ago that showed CNN to be misrepresenting the truth? Why should I be upset that Trump said the same? As a fellow journalist, do I owe my allegiance to the MSM, or to the public that has the right to expect the truth in a news story?
And just so you don’t think this is an aberration in the liberty movement, compare what the Ron Paul Liberty Report had to say about fake news stories not too long ago.
We know, thanks to Wikileaks, that the relationship between the Hillary Clinton campaign and the MSM was hand in glove crony capitalism. They were so busy working hard during the election to try to make her look good and to gloss over everything that she did wrong, that by the time they were done, they had bamboozled themselves into thinking she was bound to win.
And when it turned out that she did not win after all, because the American people are not as stupid and gullible as they thought, the first thing the MSM did was start complaining about “fake news sites.” Look in the mirror, MSM. You are projecting your own failings onto everyone else.
Mind you, I am as wary as anyone else of Donald Trump. If he intends to deal only with journalists that write what he tells them to write, then he will be no better than Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama — but no worse! We can only hope that his recent crackdown on the MSM does not mean more of the same. But wouldn’t it be nice if reporters from LibertyBuzz were invited to his next conference to occupy front row seats? We would not pander to him or his ego. But we would be fair! How refreshing is that?
